A Kisumu family that started a business — and kept it personal
Sparkkbeta was founded in 2018 with a simple idea: that the people of Kisumu deserved a local business that actually felt like one.
Where we come from and why we started
Sparkkbeta grew out of a straightforward observation: Kisumu had plenty of businesses, but not enough that felt genuinely rooted in the community. The founding family had lived in the city for over two decades, long enough to know which streets flooded in the rains, which neighbourhoods were underserved, and what locals actually needed on a practical day-to-day level. In 2018, with a small amount of capital and a large amount of local knowledge, we opened on Oginga Odinga Street. The first year was instructive — we listened more than we talked, adjusted what we offered based on real feedback, and learned that the one thing Kisumu customers valued above everything else was reliability. If you said you'd show up, you showed up. If you quoted a price, you charged that price. That lesson has never left us. Today, five years later, more than sixty percent of our customers come back to us at least twice a year, and a significant share of our new business comes through direct referrals from existing customers. We haven't spent a single shilling on billboard advertising — our reputation is built entirely on word of mouth.
How we work — and what we won't promise
We're a micro team: at any given time, Sparkkbeta runs with between three and five people, most of them family or long-term local hires who've been with us for at least two years. That means you will likely deal with the same person more than once, which we think is a feature, not a limitation. Decisions are made quickly because there's no bureaucracy — if something isn't working for a customer, we fix it on the spot. Our process is simple: we assess honestly, we quote transparently, we deliver on time, and we follow up afterwards. What we won't promise is that we can do everything. We are not a large contractor, we do not have specialist technical licences for every trade, and we don't operate outside Kisumu and its immediate surroundings. If a job falls outside our capability or area, we say so clearly and — where we can — point you toward someone who can help. Our goal is always to leave you better off than when you found us, even if that means directing you elsewhere.
